My first blog post

This is the very first blog posting. The site is coming along, I'm working on various views in the members' section. More good stuff to come...

Cocoa farmer

Aim: To understand why consumers should pay a fair price for cocoa.
You will need: Props (optional).
Duration: 30 minutes

As a group you will role play two scenarios. One is set in Ghana, the other in the UK. Each group will be performing their scenes at the same time.

Poetry against prejudice

Write a short anti-prejudice poem. You could write in the style of a Haiku, a form of traditional Japanese poetry. It is a 17-syllable verse form consisting of just three lines of 5, 7, and 5 syllables (or beats). Haiku doesn't rhyme.

Examples:

Prejudice is when
people speak without thinking
and fail to listen.

I think words can hurt
More than hitting or kicking -
Cutting me inside

When you have written a poem you can share it with other young people through this website.

Colour portraits

Aim: To recognise that we all have different coloured skin, and this is one thing that makes us special.
You will need: Paper, paints, paint pots and paintbrushes.
Duration: 45 minutes

Paint a self-portrait. Mix the correct paint colours to match your skin tone and hair colour as closely as you can. Everyone will mix their own special colour because we all have slightly different coloured skin and hair.

Mini mossie net

Aim: To understand how people can be protected from Malaria.
You will need: Empty match boxes, thin wire, scraps of fabric, circular pieces of net, paper clips, string.
Duration: 40 minutes

Make a miniature bed with a mosquito net. Explain that by sleeping under nets, people can protect themselves from being bitten by mosquitoes while they are sleeping. Mosquitoes carry Malaria, which can be a deadly disease.

Water orchestra

Aim : To have fun making music with water
You will need : water, different sized containers
Duration : 30 minutes

We use water in all sorts of ways, and often do not notice the water around us. Water makes many different sounds depending what you do with it.

Fill different containers with varying amounts of water, and blow over the tops to make sounds. Find other ways to make music with water:

Water everywhere

Aim: To appreciate that water is all around us and should be valued.
You will need: A camera.
